News from the Dockmaster
Welcome, Mariners, to the June edition of the Chula Vista Marina Newsletter. I have some very exciting news to tell you about. We are scheduling our very first event at the Marina since last year. We are officially scheduling our  October Marine Gear Swap Meet.  We usually hold these events twice a year at the Marina but have been unable to do so .  So, start going through your list of what treasures you are in need of or what treasures you have that need to go. I know we are still some months out and will announce more as we get closer to October but thought this was good news worth sharing.
Another important announcement is starting June 7th we will begin our annual tree trimming at the Marina. Take a few moments to read thorough the article that will explain the dates and timing of the tree trimming. We are breaking this up to occur over the period of 3 weeks. Please take note as we will begin distributing flyers and posting maps during the first week of June. Be prepared to make arrangements to have vehicles relocated as needed during this time. The last thing we want to do is have to tow a vehicle and charge the owner. If you have any questions about the timeframe or what areas will be getting worked on, please just contact the office and we can explain what will need to be done.
See you on the docks!

Friendly Reminders - Helpful Hints
Bilge Oil
A common call we receive in the office is that from a concerned tenant who notices or smells fuel or oil in the Marina. Ninety percent of oil in marine waters is from small, chronic sources such as bilges, fueling spills, outboard motors, urban run-off and improper disposal of used oil products. You can help protect California's waterways by preventing oily bilge water from being pumped overboard and making sure your engine is maintained properly.
  • Keep engines well-tuned; regularly check seals, gaskets, hoses, and connections for leaks and drips.
  • Change oil filters often.
  • Use drip pans with oil absorbent pads while draining oil from the bilges.
  • Use an oil absorbent pad in the bilge to capture unexpected leaks. The absorbents will capture oil before the bilge pump discharges it into the water.
  • Discard used oil absorbents at a household hazardous waste collection center.
  • Consider installing an oily water separator.
  • Clean and maintain bilges. Do not use detergents while cleaning.
  • Do not mix used oil with other substances.
  • Precautions: When using oil absorbents in the bilge, secure them to prevent clogging or fouling the bilge pump float or sensor. Oil and fuel are flammable.
  • Keep oil and fuel-saturated absorbents away from heat or sources of ignition and in well-ventilated areas.
  • Remove oily bilge water at a bilge pump out station.
  • Remember: It is unlawful and punishable by federal law to discharge any petroleum products into or upon the navigable waters anywhere in the United States.
